A few weeks back, I saw a contest announcement for the WriteFrance spring competition. Hopeless Francophile that I am, I couldn’t resist the prompt to write a short story of up to 4000 words on a French-inspired theme.
I have been writing a collection of short stories that take place in Italy, but I decided that the contest was a good opportunity to ‘branch out’ geographically, and so I sat down to write Holiday Bliss, the story of Luciana and Danilo, an Italian couple in a troubled marriage. At the urging of their marriage counselor, the couple leave their home in Torino for a holiday in Provence. Returning to the place where they first met brings back complicated memories of choices made long ago.
Unfortunately, Holiday Bliss did not win first prize in the competition, but I am extremely pleased that it was selected for publication in the WriteFrance anthology, to be published in July 2012.
Writers, if you’re interested in competing, the summer competition has a deadline of 1 August 2012. Good luck!
